C.D. Peacock is a jewelry store with a rich history dating back to 1837, making it Chicago's oldest existing retailer. Originally known as The House of Peacock, the store survived the Great Chicago Fire due to its merchandise being stored in a fireproof safe. In 1889, Charles Daniel Peacock took over the business and changed the name to C.D. Peacock. The store issued its first retail catalog in 1893 to coincide with the World's Columbian Exposition.
Over the years, C.D. Peacock has been led by various members of the Peacock family. Company president Walter C. Peacock even became a prominent figure in Chicago and Illinois sporting circles. In 1969, the family sold the company to Dayton-Hudson. However, the company faced financial difficulties during the 1992 American recession, ultimately leading to bankruptcy and a sale to Gordon Brothers. Despite this, C.D. Peacock managed to survive in a greatly reduced form.
As of 1993, the company is owned by Seymour Holtzman, Chairman of Destination XL Group, and currently has three locations in the Metro-Chicago area. Today, in 2023, C.D. Peacock is still owned by a corporation controlled by the Holtzman family. With its rich history and long-standing presence in the Chicago retail scene, C.D. Peacock continues to be a respected and trusted jewelry store in the area.
